Wind-Proof Comfort by the Fire: A Cushion-Free Outdoor Seating Plan in Southport, NC
Design TeamUnderstanding the Client’s Vision
Seating for 6+—without the fuss
The client wanted to host a crowd—at least six people, often more—around their firepit. That meant generous personal space, clear sightlines to the flames, and walk-paths that wouldn’t feel cramped. Just as important: they asked for comfort without cushions. Southport’s wind and moisture don’t play nicely with fabric that lives outdoors. The wish list was simple but specific—chairs that sit well on their own, look great year-round, and don’t need to be hauled into storage every time the forecast turns blustery.
Built to stay put in coastal wind
Light plastic chairs can flip or scoot in a stiff breeze, and metal can corrode near salt air if it’s not the right finish. My client wanted weight and durability—a setup sturdy enough to leave in place all four seasons. I also considered the frequent “company nights” where a few extra chairs might be pulled in, so we planned a layout with room to spare and easy in-and-out flow.
Design Strategy
Polywood Modern Curveback Adirondacks: the no-cushion comfort hero
For seating, I chose Polywood Modern Curveback Adirondacks. They’ve got that classic laid-back Adirondack silhouette, but the curveback design is key: it provides lumbar support and a naturally reclined posture that actually feels good for long chats—no cushion required. Polywood’s recycled HDPE material is dense and sturdy, which helps with wind resistance, and it stands up to sun, salt, and sudden showers. Cleaning is a quick hose-off, so my client won’t be wrestling with cushion covers or hauling seats to a shed.
From a comfort perspective, arm height and seat depth matter as much as anything. The Modern Curveback hits that sweet spot: arms are wide enough for a drink or book, the seat isn’t so deep that you struggle to stand, and the back angle makes it easy to lean in toward the fire and conversation. With six core chairs set in a loose circle, everyone can see each other and the flames, and we kept space for one or two “swing” chairs to roll in when extra guests arrive.
18" South Beach Side Tables: small surfaces, big upgrade
I paired the chairs with 18" South Beach Side Tables—compact, stable, and easy to shift as needed. Think of them as utility players: guests can park a mug of cocoa, a s’more plate, or a phone without reaching behind or stretching across the firepit ledge. We dotted the tables evenly between chairs so every two seats share one surface. This avoids clutter and keeps the ground clear for foot traffic.
TCF Custom Headrests: comfort that stashes away
Although we designed for cushion-free comfort, I added TCF Custom Headrests as a flexible upgrade. These headrests are petite and easy to store when not in use, but they’re a game-changer for longer evenings. They attach cleanly, align with the curveback profile, and pop off in seconds if a storm is coming. The client can keep a small basket by the back door with the headrests and a few throw blankets—instant “lounge mode” when the firepit lights up.
Sand finish to coordinate with the cement
Finish matters, especially around a permanent fire feature. The client’s firepit sits on a cement pad, so we went Sand to tie everything together. Sand softens the look of concrete and echoes beach tones you find all over Southport—dune grass, driftwood, and that pale shoreline vibe. It also hides pollen, dust, and salt spray better than deep dark finishes. The result looks intentional and calm: chairs, tables, and the fire feature feel like one cohesive design rather than a pile of parts.
The Outcome: Wind-Proof Comfort by the Fire
A year-round social hub
The new layout reads as a relaxed circle with purposeful spacing: six Modern Curveback Adirondacks around the firepit, with two South Beach tables on each side of the circle. There’s room to slide in an extra chair or two when neighbors wander over. Standing back, you see a clean visual rhythm—chair, table, chair, open path—and nothing feels crowded. Most importantly, it stays put. The density of Polywood plus the weight distribution of the Adirondacks keep the set grounded even when coastal gusts pick up.
Cushion-free doesn’t mean comfort-free
This was the big win. The curveback geometry does the heavy lifting, so nobody misses a seat pad. When the evening runs long, the TCF Custom Headrests come out and add that “lean back and look at the stars” support. Then they head right back into the basket when the fire dies down. No foam to dry, no covers to clean, no panic if a shower rolls in overnight.
Maintenance that matches real life
My client wanted a true set-and-forget setup, and that’s what they got. Polywood wipes clean with a hose or mild soap, and the Sand finish is forgiving with pollen, ash, and coastal dust. The side tables are small enough to reposition for board games or a bigger snack spread, and heavy enough not to blow over. The cement pad reads warmer with the Sand tone repeating across the seating and tables, so the whole space feels finished even when the fire is off.
Design details that feel like Southport
We didn’t chase a theme; we let the coastal setting speak. The color story is neutral and beachy, the silhouettes are modern without getting precious, and the materials are ready for salt air. You can hear the breeze, smell the marsh, and settle in around the fire without fiddling with covers or cushions. The setup is casual, welcoming, and durable—the exact combination that suits Southport evenings with friends.
Hosting made easier
With seating for 6+ on a normal night, the client can host s’mores with the kids or an adults-only wine night without dragging furniture across the yard. The side tables handle drinks and dessert plates so laps stay clear. And because the pieces are substantial, the space looks composed even when nobody’s using it. That’s a small but meaningful perk: waking up to a tidy, ready-to-use patio invites you out for morning coffee in the same chairs you gathered around the night before.
